Emirates to start A380 service to IAH

Postby TWABoy65 on Wed Jun 25, 2008 4:06 pm

Just saw this thread at Airliners.net....

http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forum ... n/4041656/

Looks like IAH one upped DFW once again. The Irony is that DFW was actually upgraded to handle the Airbus A380, was it not? And from what I understand, IAH had not made any improvements to service the A380, though according to the article, their airport board is going to build a gate that can handle it.

Looks like a spotting trip to 'Hell' might be in order sometime in '09'. Maybe BA or LH. or KE will grace DFW with their monster planes one day soon.

Wow, I didn't realize the IAH route was doing quite that well!

I am pretty sure that Terminal D was built to handle at least two A380s. I think D15 and D30 on the corners are probably the best bets for the 380. If someone else 'in the know' can confirm or deny that?

I doubt we will see any 380s at DFW from BA, LH or KE anytime soon... seeing as DFW cannot even support a daily 747 from either. I think our best bet for a 380 sighting is probably an Emirates diverting from IAH!

Now I see also from Airliners (same guy) that a Vietnam Airlines 777 is on the ground at IAH. Someone please tell me that DFW will get it's 15 minutes.

Vietnam? Scheduled service or a diversion?

Many airports were/are, but that doesn't mean they expected A380 service in the short-term. Actually we had a decent chance but the only two airlines to cancel their A380 orders happen to be the only two that would fly here (UPS, FedEx).

TWABoy65, I think you may be too concerned with the Dallas/Houston rivalry. Yeah, it would be cool if we could get everything before them, but DFW is already better than IAH in many ways. We have more international cargo airlines and are the 3rd busiest airport in the world, etc. I'm happy that they keep adding new carriers. I've taken that road-trip before and will certainly do so again. Root for Texas, it's all good!

BTW, the A380 to Houston isn't confirmed yet, and probably won't begin for quite a while.

Perhaps you are right, Zululima, it's that I am a NY'er and used to being #1 in almost everything, and I want the same for my new home, Big-D. I've been to Houston many times and the place just bugs me and Dallas is so superior in every way. Still, I will 'root' fro Texas as you suggested.

Well I'm from St. Louis, so anything that doesn't say "AA" on the side makes me happy. I can see how you'd be desperate to get back some international variety after being used to NY traffic. You know what would be great though, is if the inaugural EK A380 flight to IAH got diverted to DFW! Somehow I never expected Houston to get the first one.

Sooner or later that diversion would probably happen.

I wouldn't mind driving to IAH for a day and getting some different shots... most likely in the winter time when its not so nasty there.
