Alaska Airlines parks its last MD-80

Postby Greg on Thu Aug 28, 2008 9:28 pm

Alaska Airlines, which once flew 44 McDonnell Douglas MD-80s, parked the last of that fleet Thursday as it finishes its conversion to an all Boeing airline.

The MD-80s were getting old, but the key reason that Alaska speeded up the MD-80 retirements this year was that they sucked down fuel like crazy.

According to Alaska, the MD-80s burned 1,100 gallons of jet fuel an hour compared to 850 gallons an hour for the Boeing 737-800s that have replaced the MD-80s.
