I've thought that myself over the years, not really sure. My understanding was the taxiway was supposed to go right where the old FP was, but obviously it didn't. If my memory is correct though, the new taxiway goes behind the old FP, so in reality you would be in the AOA. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
As much as I like the old FP, the new one is superior in my estimation. Location is key, it is a great spot for cargo and international traffic in the afternoons, and easily accessible, particularly now that 114 has been sorted out. It's a credit to the airport to have carved out this little area.
Now, I'd love to see AA donate an old MD-80 and have it placed on static display at the new FP!
